A special complaint has been lodged with the Inspector General of Police's Relief Centre regarding an alleged inhumane assault by a police team on a twenty-eight-year-old youth residing in the Kandana area and working in the hotel sector.
The youth, who was returning home on his motorcycle after finishing his shift at night, was subjected to a check by a group of police officers near the Orugodawatta traffic light system, where the youth alleges that the police officers verbally abused him with obscene language. It is said that when the youth attempted to record the official number of one of the abusing officers on his mobile phone, the police officers, upon seeing this, immediately assaulted him severely, snatched his mobile phone, and deleted the official number from it.
As a result of this inhumane assault, the youth's tooth was broken, and he sustained serious injuries to several parts of his body. His mother stated that despite his desperate plea to the police officers not to hit his legs, as he had iron plates inserted due to a previous accident, they ignored him and continued to assault him. Furthermore, the police team threatened to take the youth to a canal and shoot him dead, but they eventually released him because his father was an officer who served in the Police Special Task Force, and his mother was a police officer and a journalist.
The youth, who was injured in the incident, received inpatient treatment for four days at the Ragama Teaching Hospital in North Colombo, and his mother has lodged a complaint with the Inspector General of Police's Relief Centre, seeking justice for the injustice committed. Following this complaint, a police team immediately acted and recorded a detailed statement from the hospitalized youth. The police officers allegedly involved in this assault have now been identified, and the police have launched extensive investigations to arrest them and enforce the law.
