
The Acting Police Media Spokesperson of the Sri Lanka Police Media Division has announced a special police security and traffic plan for the May Day rallies and processions organized by political parties and trade unions across the island, coinciding with International Workers' Day on May 01, 2026. To ensure these celebrations proceed peacefully, police officers, intelligence officers, motorcycle patrol units, Special Task Force officers, and official dog support have been deployed. The police also state that they expect full public cooperation to maintain smooth traffic flow.
Practical traffic plans and alternative routes have been introduced for these events, which are organized in Colombo city as well as other major cities across the island.Several major rallies are scheduled to be held in Colombo city and its surrounding areas. The National People's Power (NPP) May Day rally will take place at the public car park in front of the National Youth Services Council in Maharagama. Due to this, vehicles traveling from Colombo towards Maharagama via High-Level Road have been advised to use Delkanda and Rattanapitiya to reach Boralesgamuwa, while vehicles coming from Homagama have been advised to travel to Colombo via Boralesgamuwa and Kohuwala. Steps have also been taken to divert heavy vehicles from Pannipitiya via Thalawathugoda to Parliament Road. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) May Day rally will be held at the P.D. Sirisena Stadium in Maligawatta, and arrangements have been made for buses carrying attendees to be parked on Jayantha Weerasekara Mawatha, Panchikawatta Road, Orabipasha Mawatha, and several other surrounding roads.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party's May Day celebration is organized at Campbell Park, Borella, with parking facilities provided around Baseline Road, Siridhamma Mawatha, and Ward Place. The Frontline Socialist Party's rally will be held at Hyde Park, Slave Island, and their procession will proceed via Maradana, Soysa Roundabout, and Lipton Roundabout. The meeting of the Ceylon Bank Employees' Union and the Free Trade Zone & General Services Employees' Union will take place at E.A. Gunasinghe Stadium, Veḷḷaveediya, with their procession scheduled to start in front of Lake House. The Sri Lanka Communist Party and the Socialist People's Front will hold their rally on N.M. Perera Mawatha, Kota Road, and their procession will commence from Ayurveda Junction. Additionally, the Sarvajana Balaya Party at Park Avenue, Borella, the Ceylon Mercantile Industrial and General Workers' Union near Galle Face Green, the Podujana Peramuna and T.B. Ilangaratne Sahurda Sansadaya at Rotunda Roundabout, and the United Socialist Party at Kosgas Junction have also planned their May Day rallies and processions.
The National People's Power (NPP) has also organized May Day rallies in several major cities in other provinces. The Anuradhapura May Day rally will start near Niwanthakachethiya Vidyalaya and proceed to the new bus stand premises, with alternative routes available via Jaffna Junction and Dahaiyagama Junction. The procession in Kalutara city will take place from Katukurunda Junction to Kalutara South Bus Stand. For the Kurunegala May Day rally, due to people starting their journey near Boyagane Maha Vidyalaya and proceeding to Satyawadi Grounds, vehicles traveling on the Dambulla and Colombo roads should use alternative routes via Nawinna, Gettuwana, and Barawadapola. In Galle, the procession will start near the Dewata Expressway entrance and end at Samanala Stadium, with alternative routes introduced via Wakwella and Karapitiya for vehicles heading towards Colombo and Matara. The procession in Matara city will proceed from Nupe Junction to Kotu Dorakada, and vehicles heading towards Tangalle should travel via Rahula Junction.
In Nuwara Eliya city, the procession starting from Hawa Eliya Hospital Junction will proceed to UD Stadium, so drivers have been advised to use Magasthota and Ashokarama Junctions as alternative routes. In Kandy city, the procession is scheduled to start near Edmund Silva Stadium and proceed along William Gopallawa Mawatha to Getambe Stadium, with alternative traffic flow facilitated via Gohagoda Road and Thannekumbura. In Matale, the procession starting near Aluvihare will reach Ambagahamula Bus Stand, and vehicles heading towards Dambulla and Kandy should turn onto Gongawala Road from Godapola Junction. In Kegalle city, the procession will start from Ranwala Mahanaga Vidyalaya and proceed to the main bus stand, with vehicles diverted to alternative routes from Ranwala and Meepitiya Junctions. The police further announce that in Ratnapura, the procession departing from near Batugedara Vidyaraja Vidyalaya will proceed to the Clock Tower, so vehicles traveling towards Colombo and Embilipitiya should use Weralupa Junction and Mudduwa Junction.
