National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa announced at a press conference in Colombo that an indefinite Satyagraha would be launched near the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on behalf of former State Intelligence Chief, retired Major General Suresh Salley. Mr. Salley, who has been detained for over ninety days on court orders, is being questioned as a main suspect in the Easter attacks.
However, Wimal Weerawansa states that Mr. Salley is being detained without any formal court notification and that he is currently being treated inhumanely in the CID, given rooms where rats run on the bed and the smell of toilets permeates.Interpreting Mr. Salley's detention, which is a legal and judicial matter, from a 'political angle,' Wimal Weerawansa made several accusations in an emotional tone.
Mr. Weerawansa stated that Mr. Suresh Salley, who was initially held in a regular room at the CID, has now been transferred to a severely unhygienic cell, and that the reason for this change is the investigators' inability to obtain the kind of statement they expected from him. He also mentioned that the new cell is infested with rats. It was revealed at the press conference that since he has not been provided with even a mat to sleep on, he has to spend the night on newspapers spread on the dusty floor, and due to the foul odor emanating from the unhygienic toilet adjacent to the cell, a situation has arisen where he even vomits while eating.
Mr. Weerawansa emphasized that he strongly condemns such disrespectful treatment of a senior intelligence officer who dedicated himself to protecting the country's law, order, and sovereignty by thwarting numerous suicide bomb attacks during the war. He also made a serious accusation that the authorities and relevant officials are attempting to make Mr. Salley despise life within the cell itself and push him towards death through this inhumane practice.
However, Wimal Weerawansa made sure not to utter a single word about the accusations leveled against Salley regarding the Easter attack plot.
The leader of the National Freedom Front further stated that CID officers and the high-ranking authorities who direct them cannot be allowed to play with the life of an intelligence chief who rendered exceptional service to the country. Accordingly, he urged the entire public to gather with him at the CID headquarters on a future date to hold a Satyagraha against this injustice, emphasizing that it would not be a mere visit but a continuous protest where participants would remain present.
