The assignment of printing number plates for motor vehicles to a new company and the signing of the relevant agreement took place today (10).




For this purpose, the Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic, the Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Urban Development, and the Board of Directors of the relevant private company were present.

Commenting at the occasion, Mr. Kamal Amarasinghe, Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic, stated that according to the relevant agreement, the company must commence printing number plates within three months.




He further stated that it took a long time to procure this agreement, and it was signed on the advice of the Attorney General after its approval, following submission to the Cabinet.

However, the Commissioner General also mentioned that several rounds of preliminary discussions were held with the relevant company, and it is expected to commence these activities within a period of about two months.



Furthermore, he stated that this project is worth approximately three billion (rupees) and it has been awarded to the relevant company for a period of five years starting from today.

Further commenting at the occasion, Mr. Kamal Amarasinghe, Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic,

"These activities will be commenced with more space and facilities at our office premises in Werahera. We have now stopped printing number plates for nearly ten months. Therefore, it will take us some time to complete all these tasks. However, we will start the work as soon as possible, around late April or the first week of May. It won't take three months. We have also provided our cooperation. Already, that company has started preliminary construction work at our Werahera premises. Also, in today's discussion, the company informed that all arrangements have been made to import the necessary printing machines and also stated that those activities would be completed within three weeks."
