The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers' Union (CEBEU) has expressed deep concern regarding a chaotic reform process being implemented in the power sector over the past three to four years.
The union, issuing a statement, declared that despite repeatedly informing the authorities about the potential dangers involved and more beneficial alternative reform methodologies for the country, these have been ignored by the authorities.
CEBEU emphasizes its displeasure regarding this chaotic reform process that has been ongoing in the CEB/power sector over the past three to four years. The union states that despite informing the relevant authorities about the dangerous outcomes that could arise from this process, as well as better reform methodologies that would yield net benefits for the country, they have not taken any of these points into consideration.
However, CEBEU emphasizes that its members will not bear responsibility for any chaotic situation that may arise from these reforms, and also stressed that it will not obstruct government decisions.
Instead, the union pledged to take all measures to protect the rights of its members and employees, as their jobs are threatened due to the repeal of the CEB Act. The trade union action currently initiated aims to safeguard the rights of its members and employees at a time when their jobs are under threat.
The union also points out that it is regrettable that the relevant authorities have failed to adhere to the fundamental rights guaranteed to employees under the Sri Lanka Electricity Act, as well as the basic guidelines stipulated by Supreme Court rulings regarding the Electricity Act. It was noted that this particularly affects the status and welfare of employees who may lose their jobs due to the repeal of the CEB Act.
CEBEU states that their current trade union action is aimed at protecting employee rights and expresses regret for any inconvenience caused to the public.
