Iran has launched a new series of attacks in response to attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel, including the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Their main targets have been American military bases in the Gulf region and the countries hosting them, making the United Arab Emirates a primary target.
Specifically, the Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, where American forces are stationed, has become a primary target for Iranian attackers, leading to severe restrictions on regional airspace. A large number of ballistic missiles and drones launched by Iran have been successfully destroyed in the air by the UAE's air defense systems. It is reported that since the beginning of the attacks, approximately 137 missiles and 209 drones have been destroyed in this manner. However, due to falling debris from destroyed projectiles and some direct hits, several civilian areas have suffered property damage as well as loss of life.
Due to missile debris falling on Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, one Asian national has died and seven others have been injured. Meanwhile, a section of a building at Dubai International Airport has also sustained minor damage, and four of its staff members have been injured. Although airport authorities took immediate steps to control the situation, flights have been temporarily suspended and airspace partially closed as a precautionary measure.
The impact of missile and drone attacks has also severely affected major tourist and residential areas in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Parts of an Iranian drone, destroyed mid-air, fell onto the exterior facade of Dubai's famous Burj Al Arab hotel, causing a minor fire and damage. Additionally, a Shahed-type drone directly crashed into the Fairmont Hotel in the Palm Jumeirah area, known for its luxury hotels and residences, resulting in a large explosion. Four people were injured due to the fire that erupted near the hotel entrance.
Due to these attacks targeting American military bases, rocket debris scattered across the cities continues to cause fires and structural damage in numerous residential buildings, public facilities, and commercial areas. To address the ongoing crisis, the United Arab Emirates has taken steps to further strengthen its air defense systems, and several major airlines have extended their flight cancellations. Analysts point out that there is a risk of this regionally spreading conflict escalating further, which could lead to severe economic consequences for stable economies like the UAE.
