Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the government has not yet made any official decision to limit school operations or grant special holidays due to the prevailing fuel crisis and rising fuel prices in the country. The Minister confirmed this while participating in a special media briefing convened today (22) to clarify matters regarding the increase in fuel prices.
With the aim of minimizing fuel consumption, although a complete reduction of school days has not been implemented, authorities have planned to hold schools only four days a week to ensure the continuity of students' education. Accordingly, the current school term is scheduled to end on April 10th, and until then, schools will not be held only on Wednesdays each week.
Throughout the past period, due to the uncertainty surrounding the G.C.E. Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations, both teachers and students were under severe mental stress. To minimize that stressful situation as much as possible and to systematically continue the academic term until the first week of April, the government has taken steps to operate schools four days a week in this manner.
Despite severe economic hardships and fuel issues, ensuring that children's right to education is not violated in any way has been the primary objective of this program, which is further clarified by the Minister's comments.
