Prison officials have succeeded in overpowering a suspect inmate who took two inmates hostage inside a prison bus parked near Welikada Prison Hospital, after a great effort. According to prison sources, this incident was reported on the evening of day before yesterday (07), and officials were also able to safely rescue the hostages who were in the suspect's custody.
This suspect is a resident of Kothiyakumbura, Kegalle, and is currently remanded for trafficking, assault, and making death threats. After appearing for a court hearing at the Kegalle Magistrate's Court, he was brought to Welikada in this bus along with a group of other inmates, with the intention of transferring him to Boossa Prison in Galle thereafter.
This suspect, who opposed being taken to Boossa camp, suddenly locked the bus doors while it was parked in front of Welikada Hospital and took two other inmates hostage by holding a sharp plate to their throats. He then severely threatened prison officials, stating that if he were taken to Boossa Prison, he would slit the throats of the two hostages.
Prison officials, who immediately acted to control the situation, broke open the bus doors and stormed inside, taking steps to rescue the hostages. The suspect inmate, who was injured due to the intense struggle that ensued, has now been admitted to the Welikada Prison Hospital. A senior prison official further confirmed that several cases are pending against this suspect in the courts of Kegalle, Ratnapura, and Ruwanwella regarding heroin trafficking, assault, and making death threats.
