Six people have died after a military helicopter belonging to the State of Qatar, which was engaged in a routine operational mission on Sunday (22), crashed into the sea due to a technical fault. Official reports confirm that seven people, including the crew and passengers, were on board the aircraft at the time of the accident, and one person is still missing.
The accident occurred in the Persian Gulf region within the territorial waters of the State of Qatar, and authorities emphasize that it is not related to any regional conflict, adverse weather conditions, or external attack. The Qatar Ministry of Defense issued a statement via its official social media channels, stating that the helicopter crashed due to a technical fault during a routine operation in the regional waters, and search operations for the crew and passengers were immediately launched. Subsequently, the country's Ministry of Interior issued an updated announcement, confirming that the bodies of six out of the seven people on board the aircraft have now been recovered. The Ministry expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and further stated that intensive search operations are still underway to find the remaining missing person.
The Maritime Search and Rescue Team of the Coast and Border Security Department, as well as the Qatar International Search and Rescue Team of the internal security force known as 'Lekhwiya', are jointly involved in these search and rescue operations. For security and operational reasons, the exact location of the accident has not yet been disclosed, and authorities have stated that these operations will continue through high-alert units until the last missing person is found. No official information regarding the names, ranks, nationalities, or ages of the deceased or missing persons has been released yet, which is a standard procedure followed in military accidents.
Although the type of the crashed helicopter has not yet been officially announced, it is believed that an NH90 NFH (Naval Frigate Helicopter) or an AW139 type aircraft, commonly used for maritime patrols, may have been involved in the accident. The Qatar Air Force possesses a highly modern helicopter fleet, and this is considered the most significant Air Force helicopter accident reported in recent history. Although this accident occurred amidst intense military tensions in the Middle East, global and regional media reports have confirmed that it was solely based on a technical fault.
