Joining a press conference held at the Government Information Department, Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the final decision regarding the increase in electricity tariffs is scheduled to be announced on the upcoming April 1st. The Minister confirmed these facts while responding to a question posed by a journalist.

According to calculations made by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) in December and January, a proposal for an electricity tariff increase of about 13 percent was submitted in the first week of February. However, the Minister also pointed out that at the time these initial calculations were made, a global crisis of the kind currently observed had not emerged.

Accordingly, the relevant tariff revision proposal submitted by the Electricity Board is currently before the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka. Minister Nalinda Jayatissa further stated that all powers regarding the increase in electricity bills and the responsibility for making future decisions related to it fully rest with the Public Utilities Commission, and they will announce the relevant decision on April 1st. He expressed confidence that the Commission would think twice about this increase in light of the prevailing fuel crisis and economic problems.
