Due to the severe war situation that has developed in the Middle East region, many airspaces in that region have currently been closed for civil aviation. The attacks launched by Israel on Iran and, in response, Iran's attacks targeting American bases in the region have primarily influenced this decision.
Consequently, SriLankan Airlines has taken steps to use alternative flight routes via Afghanistan and Azerbaijan for its European flights, an official stated.Due to this crisis, flight operations through the affected region and to Middle Eastern destinations are currently facing severe disruptions. The Director General of Civil Aviation and Chief Executive Officer, Captain Daminda Rambukwella, speaking to the 'Daily Mirror' newspaper, stated that due to the use of these alternative flight routes, the travel time to European cities like London has increased by approximately one and a half hours. As a result of the extended flight duration, the airline has also had to limit the payload, including passengers, luggage, and cargo, that an aircraft can carry.
With the obstruction of airspaces, flights operating to destinations in the Middle East region have also had to be limited to a very restricted number of frequencies, without adhering to the scheduled timetable. According to reports, SriLankan Airlines had planned only a small number of flights, such as seven, for the affected region yesterday. Although authorities have indicated that the airline could face a massive financial loss due to this situation, its exact value has not yet been calculated. Furthermore, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Professor Ruwan Ranasinghe, had previously pointed out that the closure of Middle Eastern airspaces has also had a direct adverse impact on the number of foreign tourists arriving in Sri Lanka.
