A person who fraudulently obtained and used confidential information from the QR code for obtaining fuel for a car owned by a woman was arrested yesterday (25) in the Nittambuwa area by the Computer Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department.

The person arrested is a thirty-year-old individual residing in the Piliyandala area.

According to police investigations, the suspect had previously worked as a driver for the complainant woman. He had also assisted her in inspecting and selecting this new car when she purchased it.

This crime was uncovered when the woman attempted to activate the QR code to obtain her fuel quota for her new car. As she was unable to activate it, she lodged a complaint about it to the short number 1919, and subsequently, the Ministry of Digital Technology referred the complaint to the Computer Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Investigations conducted revealed that the suspect had illegally used information, including the chassis number of the said car, to fraudulently create a code. The police further confirmed that he is a taxi driver by profession and had obtained fuel from a filling station in the Piliyandala area using this fake code to fuel his taxi for his driving activities.

These investigations are being conducted under the guidance of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Asanga Karavita, who is in charge of the Criminal Investigations and Financial Crimes Division, and supervised by Assistant Superintendent of Police Chandima Arumapperuma of the Computer Crime Investigation Division. Officers including Station Master Chief Police Inspector Karunaratne, Police Inspector Gayashri, and Sub-Inspector Vinod Kumara are conducting further investigations into this matter.
