Today (12) around 11:30 AM, a seven-year-old student studying in the second grade of Lexicon International school located in Kandy, Mahaiyawa, and Wewelpitiya areas died due to an extremely tragic vehicle accident that occurred, and two other students were injured.
According to police reports, the accident was caused by a motor vehicle belonging to a member of the board of directors, or owner, of the said international school. After he parked his vehicle within the school premises and exited it, due to a sudden mechanical fault where its brakes became inoperative, the motor vehicle moved forward without anyone inside.
The motor vehicle, moving uncontrollably in this manner, collided with a group of children who were drinking water within the school premises at that time, and this tragedy occurred. One child who sustained serious injuries died, while the other two students involved in the accident were immediately admitted to the Kandy National Hospital for treatment.
Due to this tragic incident, which raised serious concerns about the safety of children within a school, residents of the area as well as parents of schoolchildren are currently in deep shock. Legal proceedings and further investigations related to this unfortunate incident are currently being carried out by the Kandy Police.
