Former US President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, have agreed to testify before the congressional inquiry into sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This decision was announced a few days before legal action was to be taken against them on charges of contempt of Congress, due to their refusal to appear before the committee for several months.

Although Bill Clinton admitted to having a friendship with Epstein, who died in prison in 2019, the former president emphasizes that he knew nothing about Epstein's sexual offenses and that he severed ties with him two decades ago. While the date of this testimony is not yet clear, Bill Clinton will become the first former president to testify before a congressional panel since Gerald Ford in 1983.

The Clintons had consistently refused requests to appear before the investigative committee, stating that they had already provided sworn statements containing the "limited information" they knew about Epstein. They had previously characterized these subpoenas as a tactic orchestrated by Donald Trump merely to embarrass political opponents.

However, Angel Ureña, Deputy Chief of Staff for Bill Clinton, confirmed on social media on Monday evening that the Clintons would appear before the committee. Ureña stated that they made this decision with the aim of setting a precedent that the law applies equally to everyone, and that they had engaged in good-faith discussions with the committee.

With this agreement, congressional leaders have decided to postpone consideration of the contempt resolution that was to be brought against the Clintons. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer stated that the next steps would be determined after clarifying the terms to which the Clintons have agreed.

No accusations have been made against the Clintons by Epstein's victims, and Hillary Clinton has stated that she has never met or spoken to Epstein. According to Epstein's private jet flight records, Bill Clinton made four international trips in 2002 and 2003, which his spokesperson stated were for work related to the Clinton Foundation.

Recently released photos show Bill Clinton at Epstein's estate by a swimming pool, which the Clinton camp says are decades old. Although the Clintons have accused this investigation of being a political vendetta, Committee Chairman Comer has emphasized that no one is above the law.
