Two suspects who threatened a retired Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police with a sword while he was exercising in the Kelaniya, Waragoda Road area and robbed him of a gold chain worth 1.2 million rupees were arrested yesterday (6) in the Mirigama area by Katana Police. The motorcycle and sword used for the robbery were also taken into police custody from the possession of these two suspects, aged 28 and 34, who reside in the Katana area.




The retired Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police who faced this incident is a resident of the Kelaniya, Narammineya area. While he was exercising on Waragoda Road on the 4th, two individuals who arrived on a motorcycle obstructed him. At that point, the pillion rider of the motorcycle approached him with a sword. Frightened, the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police fell to the ground while attempting to flee. When he fell, the suspect, pointing the sword and issuing death threats, snatched the gold chain with the pendant from his neck and fled, as revealed in preliminary investigations.

Following a complaint made to the Peliyagoda Headquarters Police regarding the incident, a comprehensive investigation was launched by observing security camera footage in the area. The arrested suspects have been identified as severely addicted to drugs, and the police revealed that there are about six charges against them related to chain robberies in several areas including Ja-Ela, Pamunugama, and Katana.




These suspects are to be produced before the court for further investigations. Under the instructions of Deputy Inspector General of Police Kalinga Jayasinghe, in charge of the Western Province North, and Senior Superintendent of Police Nuwan Asanka, in charge of the Kelaniya Division, and under the guidance of Senior Superintendent of Police Prasanna Silva, in charge of Kelaniya Division I, a team of officers including Peliyagoda Headquarters Police Inspector Pradeep Kumara and Katana Police Station OIC Wasantha Sudasinghe are conducting further investigations.
