Seven individuals, including Gayani Muthumali, who is considered the wife of notorious organized crime gang leader Makandure Madush during his final days, and her eldest son, have been arrested by the Maharagama Police. Their arrest stems from an incident where a police constable, with whom Gayani Muthumali allegedly had a close relationship, was abducted in a van and assaulted.
Police investigations have revealed that the assaulted police officer was abducted by a group who arrived in a black van while he was traveling on the road near Galle Face Green on the 4th of last month. After the abduction, the group covered his face and assaulted him inside the van. The injured constable was later found abandoned near a temple on the Maharagama railway station road.
Police state that Gayani Muthumali's eldest son was strongly opposed to and angered by the friendship the police constable had developed with his mother after Makandure Madush's death. This constable had also attended Madush's son's birthday party a few days prior, and information has revealed that he had previously resided in areas such as Grandpass, Malabe, Ranala, and Maharagama.
It is also reported that following prior information received by the police regarding this relationship, the constable attached to Maharagama Police was transferred to Mullaitivu Police. The officer injured in the assault has now been admitted to Kalubowila Hospital through the intervention of Maharagama Police, and the suspects arrested in connection with the incident, residents of Maharagama aged between 23 and 38, are scheduled to be produced before the court.
