The Colombo - Puttalam train service, which had been completely halted for several months due to the severe impact of the recent 'Ditwa' cyclone, has resumed normal operations. The railway control room confirmed that the office train, which departed from Colombo around 8:20 AM yesterday (16) after a long period of eighty-two (82) days, successfully reached Puttalam railway station.
The railway track system suffered severe damage due to this unusual weather condition that hit the island last November. Specifically, the main bridge at Baththuluoya located between Chilaw and Puttalam, as well as a small bridge in the Thilladiya area of Puttalam, were broken, leading authorities to completely suspend train services in this manner.
Repair work on the damaged railway line was carried out expeditiously, and all renovation work up to Palaviya railway station had been completed twenty days prior. However, passenger transport services had not yet commenced, but with a train arriving back in Puttalam yesterday, steps have now been taken to resume all trips on the relevant route from Puttalam railway station as usual.
