Homagama Headquarters Police report that the body of a sixteen-year-old schoolgirl, a resident of Pitipana, Homagama, who was scheduled to sit for this year's G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination, was found hanging in her home. Police investigations have revealed that the girl was studying at a popular school in the Homagama area.
The student, the youngest daughter in a family of three children, lived in the same house with her mother, father, and elder sister. On the night of the incident, she had gone to sleep in the same room with her elder sister. When the sister suddenly woke up during the night, she noticed that the younger daughter was not in bed. Alarmed by this, she immediately informed her father. Following a search conducted by the family members, the father found the body hanging in the gutter next to the kitchen at the back of the house.
Acting immediately, the father took the girl to Homagama Base Hospital, but doctors confirmed that she was already deceased upon admission. The inquest into the death was conducted by Homagama Inquirer into Sudden Deaths and Justice of the Peace, Mr. Chinthaka Udaya Kumara, while the post-mortem examination was performed by Consultant Judicial Medical Officer Mr. Panitha Seneviratne at Homagama Base Hospital.
During this inquest, a letter suspected to have been written by the deceased student was also presented by the relatives. Considering the evidence presented by the relatives and the medical report of the post-mortem examination, the Inquirer into Sudden Deaths concluded that the death of this schoolgirl was due to strangulation.
