Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne stated today (17) in a special statement in Parliament that the Supreme Court has decided that it is unnecessary to express an official opinion under Article 121 (1) of the Constitution regarding the two bills on protecting residents and cancelling rents.

The Supreme Court has informed this in a context where the petitions filed against the relevant bills have been withdrawn by the petitioners themselves.

When these petitions were called before the Supreme Court recently, the Attorney General informed the court that the relevant bills would not be passed in their current form.

Instead, the Attorney General informed the court that these bills would be referred to an expert committee and presented again, including new amendments proposed by the committee.

Based on the assurance given by the Attorney General, the petitioners who had gone to court against the bill agreed to withdraw their petitions on that day.

Therefore, the Rent Act is likely to be debated and passed in Parliament in the future.
