An investigation is currently underway into the death of a young British woman who was shot and killed by her father while visiting his home in Texas, USA. The 23-year-old woman, Lucy Harrison, who resided in Warrington, Cheshire, died on January 10, 2025, after being shot in the chest at her father Chris Harrison's home in Prosper, near Dallas.
Although police suspected this could be a homicide, a Collin County grand jury has refused to file criminal charges against the father. It was revealed at the Cheshire Coroner's Court that prior to this tragedy, a heated argument had occurred between them regarding then-US President Donald Trump, who was preparing to be sworn in for his second term. Lucy's boyfriend, Sam Littler, who was in America on holiday with her, testified in court that Lucy had asked her father how he would feel as a father if she were sexually assaulted. Littler further stated that Lucy became very upset due to her father's reply that it would not be much of a shock to him as he had two other daughters.
On that day, about half an hour before they were due to leave for the airport, Chris Harrison took his daughter from the kitchen to his downstairs bedroom. Littler testified that about 15 seconds later, a loud gunshot was heard, and then he heard Chris shouting to his wife, Heather, and he ran into the room. There, he saw Lucy lying on the floor near the bathroom, and her father screaming hysterically beside her.
Chris Harrison, who did not personally attend the inquest, informed the court via a written statement that the shooting was accidental, occurring when he was trying to show his Glock 9mm firearm to his daughter. He stated that he could not definitively remember if his finger was on the trigger of the gun, which he had purchased for self-defense. He also admitted to having consumed about 500ml of Chardonnay white wine, purchased from a 7-Eleven store that day, due to the sadness of his daughter leaving. He had previously undergone rehabilitation for alcohol addiction. A police officer's testimony also confirmed that he had consumed alcohol that day.
Chris Harrison's lawyer, Anna Samuel, requested Coroner Jacqueline Devonish to recuse herself from the case, stating that the investigation was taking on the characteristics of a criminal inquiry, but the coroner refused. Lois Norris, the lawyer representing Lucy's mother, Jane Coates, described the request as a deliberate obstruction by the father's legal team. Lucy, who worked for the fashion brand Boohoo,
was a very active young woman who loved to argue for what she believed in, her mother said. Chris Harrison further stated in a statement released through his lawyers that he fully accepts the consequences of his actions and that the weight of that loss will be felt by him for the rest of his life. The verdict of the inquest is expected to be announced on Wednesday.
