Avoiding sugar is good for the body, but stopping it suddenly might lead to strange experiences.

Currently, many processed foods, including bottled beverages, yogurt, and various flavored desserts, contain high amounts of sugar. Therefore, nutritionists are urging people to consider refraining from sugar consumption for at least a month.

Dr. Tushar Tayal, Consultant in Internal Medicine at Gurugram, states that in the first few days of stopping sugar consumption, symptoms such as irritability, fatigue, anxiety, or a drop in mood may occur. The main reason for this is the lack of dopamine stimulation that the brain receives from sugar. Headaches and intense cravings for sugary foods are common during this initial phase as the body adjusts to this sudden change.

However, experts point out that this should be seen as a long-term health investment rather than just a short-term body cleansing program. After two weeks, blood sugar levels begin to stabilize, which helps control sudden energy drops and excessive hunger. At this point, the body gains the ability to manage the insulin hormone more efficiently, and as insulin levels decrease, the stored fat in the body begins to burn, which is a key characteristic of weight loss.

After three weeks, the positive results of not consuming sugar become more evident. Specifically, acne and inflammation on the skin decrease, and the skin becomes clearer. As sugar levels stabilize, mental concentration and attention also improve. Reduced calorie intake and regulated hormones accelerate weight loss, and the risk of high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease significantly decreases.

As people move away from sugary drinks, sweets, and bakery products, many turn to more nutritious foods like fruits, nuts, and milk, says Upasana Parv Kalra, Clinical Nutritionist at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Dwarka. Choosing berries, dates, or yogurt instead of sweet biscuits provides the body with antioxidants and improves gut health. It also greatly helps in staying active and energetic throughout the day.

Sugar consumption contributes to increased inflammation in the body, which can lead to acne and premature aging. Many people report a noticeable difference in their skin and reduced puffiness after refraining from sugar for a few weeks. Furthermore, after 30 days without sugar, the taste buds on the tongue reset, and even the natural sweetness of a fruit begins to be perceived very well.

Many people limit sugar control to the New Year or a specific period, but experts emphasize that for a meaningful change, it should become a part of one's lifestyle. In addition to sweets, hidden sugars are present even in sauces, bread, grain foods, and savory packaged foods, making it crucial for consumers to read and understand food labels.

If completely cutting out sugar is difficult, natural substitutes like honey, jaggery, or dates can be used in moderation, but it should be remembered that these also affect blood sugar levels. Instead, adding spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and vanilla to food can enhance its flavor even without sugar. Doctors point out that consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, protein, and fiber can help curb sugar cravings and lead a healthy life.
