Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa has decided to end the Satyagraha he conducted for over 24 hours in front of the Ministry of Education, after its failure. He had been demanding the withdrawal of new education reforms and the resignation of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya from her post as the current Minister of Education. He engaged in this continuous protest together with a group of civil society representatives, but the government had not fulfilled his demands.
Wimal's decision is unclear given that Harini has not resigned from her ministerial post, nor have all the reforms been completely withdrawn. However, although some positive solutions to this issue were provided at today's cabinet media briefing, Minister Nalinda also stated that these decisions are not solutions to Wimal's Satyagraha.Cabinet Media Spokesperson, Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa emphasized that no cabinet reshuffle will take place, regardless of any protests against the education reform program. He clearly stated that Dr. Harini Amarasuriya will not be removed from her post as Minister of Education or Prime Minister as per Mr. Wimal Weerawansa's demands, and that the government will proceed with these reforms as a matter of policy, in accordance with the public mandate.
The Minister pointed out that Mr. Wimal Weerawansa has the freedom to engage in protests for any duration, as long as it does not disrupt the functions of the Ministry of Education or the Department of Examinations, and does not inconvenience the public. However, Mr. Jayatissa stated in response to questions from journalists that if he waits for the Prime Minister to resign, he will have to remain there for a long time, and no one will come to offer him king coconuts to break his fast.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet has decided to review the education reform process for Grade 6 and commence it in 2027, and the Minister stated that this decision is not a reason to stop the protest. However, he added at the cabinet decision briefing that the education reforms for Grade 1 will be implemented as planned this year.
According to the investigation reports conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department and the Ministry of Education regarding the controversial Grade 6 English module, the Governing Council of the National Institute of Education is scheduled to take disciplinary action against the officials responsible. These education reforms will continue to be implemented through five main pillars: human resource development, infrastructure and administrative reforms, assessment and evaluation, curriculum development, and public awareness.
