The Colombo High Court has issued a warrant for the arrest and production in court of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, due to his failure to appear in court when the case related to the alleged illicit acquisition of assets exceeding 75 million rupees was taken up for hearing. This order was issued by Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihal, who further ordered that notices be issued to the sureties who appeared on behalf of the defendant, instructing them to appear before the court at the next hearing to present their arguments.

The further hearing of this case, filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, accusing him of illicitly acquiring money and property while serving as a minister from 2010 to 2015, has been scheduled for January 20, 2026.

In addition to this case, the Fort Magistrate's Court had also issued a warrant against the former minister for failing to appear in court in connection with the alleged incident where 40 government vehicles were provided to the National Freedom Front and misused, causing a loss of 09 million rupees to the government.

The former minister, who is facing several criminal cases, recently engaged in a Satyagraha to draw the country's attention, and regarding this, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa hinted at a press conference, stating, 'Some people go on hunger strikes when their court dates approach.'
