A group of civil society representatives, including former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, leader of the National Freedom Front, started a continuous Satyagraha in front of the Isurupaya Ministry of Education, demanding the withdrawal of new education reforms and the resignation of Minister Harini. Mr. Wimal Weerawansa remained there until the evening. However, as the evening ended and night dawned, Wimal Weerawansa left the premises.

After that, a small group of people were seen remaining on the platform by the camera.

This protest has been introduced as a 'continuous Satyagraha' and not a 'fast', and that others would continue the protest after he left, Wimal had stated when questioned by media camera operators this afternoon (12) while he was present.

Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa emphasized on that occasion that the protest initiated by him and his group was a Satyagraha and not a fast, and that a fast and a Satyagraha are not one but two different things.

In 2010, Wimal Weerawansa undertook a fast to gain the attention of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. That fast was observed without food, but this Satyagraha is not such a thing, and it appears to be carried out with the intention of prolonging it for a sufficient period using various groups.
