On January 20, 2026, the latest status of foreign exchange rates and gold prices in the Sri Lankan financial market has been reported. According to data released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), the indicative value of the US dollar was recorded at approximately LKR 309.65.

Some fluctuations were observed in the dollar transaction values of several major commercial banks. Sampath Bank announced a buying price of LKR 306.50 and a selling price of LKR 313.00 for a US dollar. Commercial Bank's dollar buying price was LKR 304.28, and the selling price remained at LKR 313.00. Notably, Nations Trust Bank (NTB) reported a high selling value of LKR 314.84 for a dollar. Seylan Bank and Union Bank also maintained dollar selling prices exceeding LKR 311.00.




Focusing on the behavior of other major foreign currencies, the average buying price of the Euro was recorded at LKR 352.28 and the selling price at LKR 366.48. For the British Pound (GBP), a high buying price of LKR 406.41 and a selling price of LKR 421.91 were set. Banks bought the Australian Dollar at LKR 201.68 and sold it at LKR 212.20, while the neighboring Indian Rupee remained stable with a buying value of LKR 3.36 and a selling value of LKR 3.49. Slight fluctuations were also observed in currencies such as the Singapore Dollar, Canadian Dollar, and Japanese Yen during this period.

In parallel with the exchange rates in the financial market, gold prices in the local market have also been updated.


According to the latest reports, the price of one gram of 24-carat gold is recorded at LKR 46,710, and one gram of 22-carat gold at LKR 42,770. A sovereign (8 grams) of 22-carat gold, commonly used for jewelry, was valued at LKR 342,160, while a sovereign of 24-carat gold, considered investment gold, recorded a higher value of LKR 373,968. These data further confirm that the price of gold per ounce has risen to LKR 1,458,758 due to the influence of the world market.
