The mother of a 19-day-old infant, who fell into a well and died, has been arrested by Giriulla Police on suspicion. Police state that a 30-year-old female graduate and quality analyst, residing in Narangamuwa, Hamangalla area, has been arrested in connection with this incident.
Preliminary police investigations have revealed that this female graduate had been leading a good family life with her husband, who is an engineer. It is further reported that she had returned home after giving birth to the child.
Police also state that the couple and the child were at home at the time of the incident. Further investigations have revealed that when the husband woke up upon hearing a sound and looked, the child had fallen into the well, and the wife, who reportedly fell into the well, had come out with the help of a pipe that was there.
Police suspect whether this woman, having fallen into a mental state known as 'Vadugei Sanniya' (postpartum psychosis), which is said to occur after childbirth, jumped into the well with the child. It is also noteworthy that police investigations have revealed that no disputes or conflicts between this couple have ever been reported.
