Senior Attorney Hemaka Senanayake stated that the Most Venerable Mahanayake Theros are deeply shocked and saddened by the insults made against the Chief Incumbent of Mihintale Rajamaha Viharaya, Dr. Venerable Walawahengunawewe Dhammarathana Nahimi, and the Mihintale sacred site through social media and by various individuals. He made this statement when the case related to the said insults and the charges of threatening and demanding ransom was recalled before Anuradhapura Additional Magistrate P.H.W.D.L.
Samarasinghe in open court when it was recalled.Further commenting, the senior attorney pointed out that the defendant in this case, Ajith Edirisinghe, was the pioneer in initiating this defamatory process against the Chief Incumbent Thero and the sacred site by various parties. The attorney accused before the court that after the defendant, who is the administrator of the YouTube channel named "A Voice from Mihintale," started these disgraceful propagandas through that channel, other individuals were also prompted to follow suit and insult.
When this case, filed under the charges of threatening the Chief Incumbent Thero via WhatsApp and demanding ransom, and defaming through a YouTube channel, was called, the complainant, the Chief Incumbent Thero of Mihintale, also gave evidence before the court. Officers of the Mihintale Police led the evidence, and after His Reverence gave evidence for over an hour, Attorney Nadeesha Wijerathne, appearing for the defendant, conducted cross-examination.
The suspect, Ajith Edirisinghe, a resident of Mihintale, Kandy Road area, has currently been released on bail, and lawyers appearing for the Chief Incumbent Thero had previously informed the court that two other cases with similar charges against him are pending before the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court and the Aluthkade District Court. It was also revealed that all these legal proceedings are based on the defamation of the Chief Incumbent Thero and the sacred site, and threatening and demanding ransom.
The Additional Magistrate ordered the further hearing of the case to be postponed until May 27th, and also ordered the investigative police officers to be summoned to give evidence on that day. In this legal proceeding, a team of lawyers including Senior Attorneys Hemaka Senanayake and Chandana Weerakoon appeared for the complainant party, while Sergeant Bandara appeared for the prosecution on the instructions of Mihintale Police Station OIC Chief Police Inspector Ranjith Chandrasiri.
