A police officer was assaulted after being made to sit on a chair, for allegedly breaking into a house for an illicit affair.

An incident has been reported from Kathlana area, Pothupitiya, where a police constable attached to the Pothupitiya Police was assaulted and injured by a group of relatives of a woman and local residents. The police officer, who was injured in this assault that occurred on the night of the 13th, has been admitted to Ratnapura Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The police officer in question had visited the house of a woman whose husband is abroad on that night, and upon seeing this, the woman's husband's relatives and neighbors together apprehended him. It is reported that a group of about twenty-five people assaulted him, accusing him of having an illicit affair with the woman. Furthermore, the group that carried out the assault had video-recorded the constable being seated on a chair in the house and beaten, and had released the video on social media.

However, explaining the facts regarding this incident, Pothupitiya Police OIC, Police Inspector Kumara Nalawansha states that this could be a pre-planned assault. The assaulted officer is an officer who actively contributed to suppressing liquor and drug trafficking in the area, and the OIC emphasizes that a group ambushed him and launched this attack while he was returning after an official duty on that day.

The police state that the suspects involved in the assault have been identified, but they have fled the area and are in hiding. Under the instructions of Deputy Inspector General of Police for Ratnapura Division, Renuka Jayasundara, and Senior Superintendent of Police for Ratnapura Division, P.M. Jayaratne, Pothupitiya Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
