Mr. Raju Bandara, a veteran singer and musician, passed away this afternoon (15). He had been ill since undergoing kidney-related surgery last year, and his demise occurred at his home in Ragama. He was 65 years old at the time of his death.
Born on April 14, 1960, in Kegalle, Mr. Raju Bandara hailed from a prominent family background in the country's art field. He was the son of veteran singer Mrs. Chandra Bandara and the beloved brother of popular musician Mr. Mahinda Bandara. He entered the world of art as the lead guitarist of the 'Dark Shadows' band while still studying at Kegalu Maha Vidyalaya. Later, inspired by his uncle, Mr. Premanath Kodithuwakku, he made music his life.
After his school education, Mr. Raju Bandara, together with Mr. Rookantha Gunathilaka, formed the Western music band 'Nayagra' and provided music to hotels in the Kurunegala and Habarana areas. Later, he joined Mr. Clarence Wijewardena's 'Madhara' band and toured countries like England and France. A significant milestone in his musical career was joining the famous 'Fortunes' band at the invitation of Mr. Stanley Peiris and working with Mr. Keerthi Pasqual.
Moving beyond band music, he established himself as a solo vocalist through his album 'Man Adare Ran Seenu,' released in 1993. He succeeded in gifting many extremely popular songs to local fans, such as 'Ma Adarei Mulu Lowatath Wada,' 'Oya Roo Soba,' 'Ran Seenu Nada Dee,' 'Hada Wedanawa,' 'Kawudo Mage Lowe,' and 'Rosa Mal Kumari.' Additionally, the song 'Hada Gee Pothe Pituwak Ira,' which he sang with his mother, was also greatly loved by fans.
Not limited to singing and playing instruments, Mr. Raju Bandara also showcased his talents in the acting field. He was fortunate enough to be nominated as the best emerging actor for his performance in the tele-drama 'Diya Keta Pahana.' In recent times, he participated in many music programs broadcast on Derana TV and remained an active artist in music until his final days, releasing a new song album titled 'Dannawada Oya' in 2024.
