The National Audit Office reveals that approximately two hundred crore rupees (2000 million rupees) due to the government from seven hundred and five doctors who violated bond agreements with the government by going abroad for postgraduate studies and remaining there, has not yet been recovered. The latest report issued by the office strongly points out that responsible officials in the relevant departments have not acted with due efficiency and responsibility to recover this large sum of money.
In addition, audit divisions state that approximately twelve crore rupees (120 million rupees) due to the government from one hundred and sixteen medical officers who did not submit their personal files for audit purposes, has also not yet been recovered. Furthermore, it is reported that over ten lakh rupees (1 million rupees) paid as excess salaries and allowances to five officers who have abandoned service but had not entered into bond agreements with the government, has also not been recovered.
Audit divisions have observed a significant increase in the trend of doctors going abroad for training related to postgraduate courses, foreign employment, as well as other personal reasons, and abandoning service. The National Audit Office further points out that due to this situation, there is a risk of an increase in the amount of arrears owed to the government by doctors.
