Bambalapitiya Police report that one of two cousins, who were engaged in diving for ornamental fish in the deep sea off the Bambalapitiya coast, died after getting trapped in a coral reef. The unfortunate young man who passed away has been identified as 27-year-old George Selvam Shehan Anthony, a resident of Fernando Road, Ballawatta area.
The two had been habitually catching ornamental fish, and yesterday (10) around 11:00 PM, they entered the sea from the Bambalapitiya coastline and began diving.
It is reported that after diving to a depth of about 10 feet on the seabed and swimming about 10 meters apart, one of the cousins looked back after about three hours and could not see his relative.
He then immediately returned to shore and investigated the matter.
When he could not find him on land either, he dived back into the sea for a search, during which the missing young man was found trapped among a coral reef on the seabed.
Following a notification to the Bambalapitiya Police regarding the incident, Navy officers acted and brought the body of the deceased young man ashore from among the coral reef this morning.
