The government has decided to provide a sum of one crore rupees as compensation to individuals who lost their homes and land due to the adverse weather conditions that affected the island. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake revealed this today, making a special statement in Parliament.
A sum of 50 lakh rupees is to be provided for the construction of a new house for homes that are completely damaged and uninhabitable due to the disaster, and if the affected people do not have land, the government will arrange to provide them with land.
The President stated that if the government does not have land to provide, an additional grant of up to 50 lakh rupees will be given for purchasing land, in addition to the grant provided for house construction.
Instead of the previously provided 10,000 rupees on a reimbursement basis for cleaning disaster-affected homes to make them suitable for re-habitation, this time a sum of 25,000 rupees has been arranged for everyone. Furthermore, without considering home ownership, the government has also arranged to provide a one-time grant of 50,000 rupees per household to residents for purchasing essential kitchen equipment.
It has also been decided that if people who have lost their homes and are staying in displacement camps wish to move out and live in a rented house, a grant of 25,000 rupees per month will be provided for a period of three months, with the option to extend it up to six months if necessary. Furthermore, the President emphasized that for families who have lost both their homes and livelihoods, if there are two members, 25,000 rupees per month will be provided for the next three months, and if there are more than two members, 50,000 rupees per month will be provided for the same period.
