The Department of Motor Traffic has announced that the system of issuing temporary driving licenses, which was previously limited only to foreigners visiting the country, has now been decided to be issued to Sri Lankans living abroad as well as dual citizens based on the driving licenses issued by their respective countries.

Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Mr. Kamal Amarasinghe, stated that these temporary driving licenses can be obtained by foreigners as well as Sri Lankans with dual citizenship from the Department of Motor Traffic office established at Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport and the main office in Werahera.

The Commissioner General clarified that this procedure has been expanded through the Government Gazette Extraordinary No. 2463/04 issued on November 17th last year. He further stated that Sri Lankans living abroad and dual citizens will now have the opportunity to obtain a temporary driving license by paying the prescribed fee, based on the driving license issued by foreign countries.

The original system of issuing temporary driving licenses in this country, which was limited to foreign tourists based on driving licenses issued by their countries, was launched on August 03rd last year by establishing an office at Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport.
