Fara Rumi, the elegant Sri Lankan who went to the Swiss Parliament

Fara Rumi, a Sri Lankan national, has been elected as the Second Vice President of the National Assembly of the Swiss Federal Parliament. This marks the first time in Swiss parliamentary history that a Sri Lankan has been elected to such a high position.

She is a 34-year-old professional and an expert in the field of law.




Fara Rumi, an active social worker for the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland, received her primary education from Bishop's College, Colombo. In 1998, when she was 6 years old, she migrated to Switzerland with her family.

She began her political journey in 2021 when she was elected to the Grenchen City Council. With her current election, she is slated to be re-elected to Parliament in 2027 and become the President of the Swiss Parliament in 2028. As a parliamentarian, she primarily focuses on health policy, social policy, foreign policy, and ensuring equal opportunities for all. She is also actively involved in the prevention of violence against individuals with disabilities.




Fara Rumi has also planned to undertake a tour of her birth country Sri Lanka early next year.
