Kabilithigollewa Magistrate Ms. Nimesha Patabendi has rejected the request made by the lawyers to consider the three suspects, who are in remand custody on charges of attempting to conceal a crime, as aiding and abetting any crime.
By order of the magistrate, these three suspects residing in the Horowpothana area were further remanded until the first day of January next year. The reason for this incident was that a police sergeant, who was traveling in a three-wheeler driven by the suspects on the Kabilithigollewa - Horowpothana A29 main road, was hit and injured. The unconscious sergeant and his three-wheeler were dragged about ten meters away to a culvert, and they have been charged with attempting to conceal the crime by claiming he died after hitting a culvert.
The police officer who died due to this premeditated and deliberate crime was a 41-year-old police sergeant who served at the Kabilithigollewa Police Station.
Police Sergeant (53290) Prasanna Ranjith Dissanayake appeared for the prosecution, acting on the instructions of Kabilithigollewa Headquarters Chief Police Inspector Chamila Ratnayake. Attorneys Nalinda Sanjeewa Kumara and Piyumi Hansamali presented arguments to the court on behalf of the suspects.
