The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) emphasizes to the public that those affected by the disaster should only return to their homes after safety in those areas has been confirmed. Dr. Wasantha Senadheera, a Senior Scientist at the organization, requests people to patiently remain in safe locations until officials from the relevant district offices conduct on-site inspections and provide their conclusions.
Due to heavy rainfall, soil layers have become saturated with water, posing a high risk of landslides, rockfalls, and earth slips in the coming days. Consequently, landslide early warnings and red evacuation notices issued for seventy Divisional Secretariat divisions across seven districts have been further extended.
Mr. Senadheera points out that if signs such as unusual sounds from within the earth, or the sudden appearance or disappearance of water springs are observed, people should immediately evacuate those locations. As the flood risk has not completely subsided, it is crucial for the public to remain continuously vigilant.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre states that many roads in Ampara, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, Gampaha, and Badulla districts remain submerged.
