Due to the flood threat posed to the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Camp in Polonnaruwa, a special operation was launched by the security forces on the 29th to safely evacuate a large number of people, including detainees.
As the Mahaweli River overflowed in the Somawathiya area, posing a severe risk of the camp being submerged, steps were taken to swiftly transport the affected individuals to the Senapura Tertiary Training Centre using army tanks, buses, and lorries.Through a joint operation launched by the Army, Navy, and Police in response to this emergency disaster, 359 detainees undergoing rehabilitation were safely rescued. Additionally, 150 military officers and staff serving at the camp were also safely transferred to the Senapura camp using these special vehicles, stated Welikanda Police Station OIC, Police Inspector L. P. J. Kumarasinghe.
Authorities have arranged for all these individuals to be temporarily housed at the Senapura Training Centre until the prevailing flood and adverse weather conditions subside, and necessary facilities have already been provided to them. A senior military officer at the Senapura camp, clarifying the matter, confirmed that all relocated detainees and officers are currently very safe at the centre.
