Responding to a public concern, the Ministry of Education has launched an investigation into an inappropriate web reference found in a printed Grade 6 English language module.

The incident came to light after social activist Thilini Shalwin pointed out that due to a typing error in three places within the newly introduced Grade 6 syllabus, users were directed to an unintended website instead of the educational application mentioned in the lesson.

Subsequent investigations by authorities confirmed that this incorrect reference directed users to a website related to the LGBTQ+ community. This raised serious concerns about the appropriateness of the content for school materials.

Responding to the issue, the Ministry of Education stated that an investigation was launched following a complaint regarding an inappropriate web reference in a Grade 6 English module prepared by the National Institute of Education.

The Ministry confirmed that a preliminary review verified the complaint, and subsequently, steps were taken to immediately halt the distribution of the printed modules. An investigation has also been launched with immediate effect to identify those responsible.

Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Mr. Nalaka Kaluwewa, issued a statement saying that as a next step, a complaint is expected to be lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The Ministry further stated that corrective measures would be taken based on the results of the investigation, and necessary actions would be introduced to prevent such errors from recurring in future curriculum reforms.
