Sri Lanka Cricket has taken steps to appoint former star fast bowler Lasith Malinga as the fast bowling coaching consultant for the Sri Lanka national cricket team. Sri Lanka Cricket announced that this appointment has been made with the aim of enhancing the national team's preparation and player development, targeting the 2026 T20 World Cup Cricket tournament.
This appointment has been made on a short-term basis and will be effective from December 15, 2025. Accordingly, Malinga is expected to contribute to strengthening the national team's fast bowling unit for a period of one month, until January 25, 2026.
Especially, Sri Lanka Cricket expresses confidence that Malinga's unique technical knowledge of 'death bowling' or bowling the final overs of an innings, combined with his vast experience in international cricket, will be a great strength to the team in crucial tournaments like the World Cup. Utilizing his expertise to enhance the performance of bowlers in short-format game patterns has been a primary expectation of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The ICC Men's T20 World Cup, co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India, is scheduled to begin on February 07, 2026. With arrangements made to hold the inaugural match of the tournament at the SSC (Sinhalese Sports Club) ground in Colombo, Malinga's coaching contribution is expected to further intensify the preparation of Sri Lankan fast bowlers.
