A tragic double suicide reported involving a family in Bengaluru, India, has shocked the entire nation. Police have revealed that the couple, Ganavi and Suraj Shivanna, had come to Sri Lanka for their honeymoon after getting married, and an argument broke out between them over a friendship Ganavi had before her marriage.
After this argument, Ganavi returned to India and committed suicide. Following her death, her husband's family was accused of dowry harassment. Meanwhile, Suraj, deeply shocked by his wife's death, fled Bengaluru with his family, fearing death threats from Ganavi's family, and later hanged himself in a hotel room in Nagpur, Maharashtra.Suraj and Ganavi were ceremonially married in Bengaluru on October 29, and it is reported to have been an arranged marriage. After the wedding, the couple came to Sri Lanka for a 10-day honeymoon trip, but due to an argument over Ganavi's previous relationship, their trip was cut short, and they had to return to Bengaluru after five days. Media reports, citing family sources, state that Ganavi told Suraj she did not want to continue the marriage, and that she had previously expressed her unwillingness to marry but agreed under pressure from her aunt. Attempts by family members to resolve the issue between Suraj, who owns an internet distribution service in Vijayanagar, Bengaluru, and Ganavi, an MBA graduate, were also unsuccessful.
Although Suraj's elder brother, Sanjay Shivanna, intervened to resolve the issue, the couple did not listen. That same night, Ganavi went to her father's house and hanged herself a few hours later. She was rushed to the hospital but died while receiving treatment. Her family filed a complaint with the Bengaluru police, accusing Suraj and his relatives of dowry harassment. After Ganavi's death, tensions escalated between the two parties, and Suraj's family, terrified after about 30 people stormed their house in Vijayanagar looking for Suraj, decided to flee Bengaluru. Sanjay vehemently denies the dowry allegations, stating that he made no demands and bore all the wedding expenses.
On December 23, Suraj, his mother Jayanthi, and his brother went to Hyderabad, and the next day traveled to Nagpur, where they booked two rooms in a hotel. In the Nagpur hotel, after midnight, Suraj hanged himself with a dupatta from the ceiling fan. Around 12:30 AM, his mother found him and attempted to commit suicide herself, but it was thwarted. After she informed the hotel staff and Sanjay, Suraj was hospitalized, but doctors confirmed he was dead. The 60-year-old mother, distraught by her son's death, also attempted suicide but was rescued and hospitalized. Senior Police Inspector Nitin Magar stated that she is currently out of danger. Nagpur Police are investigating the incident and are working in conjunction with Bengaluru Police.
