Former Minister Harin Fernando states that although millions have been received as aid for the Rebuilding Sri Lanka project, it amounts to a very small sum when converted to dollars.
He made this statement while addressing a press conference held yesterday (15).
Speaking further, the former minister stated that Sri Lanka would face a major economic catastrophe after the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year. He also emphasized, "Mark today's date, we told you so."
He spoke strongly, saying: We don't want Sri Lanka to keep falling like this. It fell due to an economic crisis. It fell for a period due to the tsunami. After that, we fell due to various political crises. It fell due to COVID. It's very difficult for Sri Lanka to bear another one.
We believe that if there isn't a proper order, a plan, a program, or a projection, Sri Lanka will face a major economic catastrophe by the Sinhala New Year in April or May. Mark today's date, we told you so. Remember that.
There's talk that some money will be received from India. There's a rumor that billions are to be received. If that happens, we are happy. But how will this be managed? Is this coming to us as a line of credit, a loan, or a grant? If this money is received, how will it be used, and what committee is in place for this?
Consider that a major project called Rebuilding Sri Lanka is underway. Only about eighteen hundred million has been collected so far.
