Heavy machinery clears obstruction near Peradeniya Yaka Bridge

A major operation to remove a large obstruction in the Mahaweli River, which had challenged engineers for over ten days, commenced on Monday (December 15) near the Peradeniya Yaka Bridge.

According to Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, Bimal Ratnayake, the problem arose due to the accumulation of mud, soil, and plant debris around a deep cavity in the riverbed, forming a large, island-like mass. The Minister also stated that attempts by Navy divers to remove this mass, located about ten feet deep, were unsuccessful due to its density.

On December 13, officials from the Land Development Corporation (LDC) inspected the site and took charge of the task. With the assistance of the Army, a Low Bed Mover was used to transport heavy equipment from Colombo to Peradeniya. Accommodation and logistical support were arranged for LDC officials and engineers, with local representatives coordinating food and beverages. This operation was continuously managed by private staff members.

Minister Ratnayake stated that heavy machinery was lowered into the Mahaweli River, and work commenced yesterday (December 15). He further added that authorities expect to remove the obstruction within a day, after which engineers will determine the next steps regarding the cavity and the safety of the bridge.

Minister Ratnayake further noted that the rapid deployment of machinery and expertise is a crucial step towards resolving the long-standing problem associated with the Yaka Bridge.
