The adverse weather conditions affecting Sri Lanka and the resulting severe flood disaster have turned many lives upside down. Countless individuals have lost family members and valuable property due to this devastation. There are thousands of stories about this.
This note is about one such story.

Mrs. Udesha Jayasekara, an online English teacher temporarily residing in the Mahiyanganaya area, is another unfortunate individual who faced the bitter experience of this natural disaster. With the intention of spending the period from last February to December, she was staying on the upper floor of a house in the Ridee Kotalia area of Mahiyanganaya, when the unexpected water monster snatched away all the physical resources connected to her professional life.

Even though water accumulated around the house with the torrential rain that fell from the night of the 26th, even the homeowners believed that the water would not rise above three feet. However, nature defied predictions, and the water level rose rapidly in a very short time, eventually reaching a flood height of about twenty feet. As the water rushed in, she had to flee, saving her life by wading through chest-deep water, carrying only her mobile phone, power bank, a pair of eyeglasses, and an outfit for her child.

Although she went to a safe place with her child and six other families, all her possessions were lost to the water. Her motorcycle, which was her mode of transport, was swept away by the flood, and her computer, laptop, camera, lighting systems, and classroom setup, all used to educate thousands of children, were destroyed. Nevertheless, she finds solace only in the fact that she was able to save her life, and she is currently living in great difficulty without electricity or clean water at her temporary shelter.

Although she has lost everything physically, her determination and passion for the teaching profession have not been swept away by the flood. She requests support to acquire the professional equipment needed to stand on her own feet again and meet her students. Striving to stand on her own rather than relying on others' pity, she remains confident that even though she is in a dark room at this moment, she will see the light tomorrow.

As her poignant story spread across social media, it garnered the attention of many. Individuals like Tehan Pinsara and Saman Bandara have come forward to repair her damaged electronic equipment for free or provide alternatives, while another English teacher, Mr. Dilhara, has invited her to use his facilities until she can resume her classes. Despite losing everything in a natural disaster, Teacher Udesha Jayasekara, who strives to rebuild her life based on human connections and unwavering courage, is an inspiration to many.
