The Ministry of Power and Energy announced that restoration work on the Rantambe - Mahiyanganaya power transmission line, which was severely damaged by the impact of Cyclone Ditwa, will be completed expeditiously, and power supply is expected to be restored by next Sunday (07).
Due to the adverse weather conditions experienced in recent days, a tower belonging to the 132-kilovolt high-voltage transmission system extending from Rantambe to Mahiyanganaya completely collapsed and was destroyed, and its power line system also suffered severe damage.
Due to this sudden breakdown, power consumers in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts of the Eastern Province, including the Mahiyanganaya area, faced the problem of disrupted supply.
However, to manage this situation, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) immediately intervened and has taken steps to provide electricity for essential services such as hospitals and water pumping stations by using a temporary 33-kilovolt power line system.
Furthermore, due to existing capacity issues, the CEB also implemented a special program to provide electricity for a few hours on a rotational basis, covering several areas.
Meanwhile, to observe the operations for restoring power supply, the subject minister visited the area, and the Bowatenna Hydropower Plant premises, which was damaged by a collapsed tower, was also inspected by the minister.
