A naval officer addicted to online gambling was arrested by the Port Police yesterday (24th) morning in Trincomalee while stealing a three-wheeler and attempting to flee. It is reported that the three-wheeler was stolen while it was parked in front of a cinema hall.
According to a complaint received by the Port Police, a police team operating under the direction of OIC Chief Inspector S. K. Samarasinghe pursued the suspect and the stolen three-wheeler. During the arrest operation, the police stated that the three-wheeler collided with another vehicle and overturned.
The arrested suspect is a soldier serving at the Trincomalee Naval Base. Police investigations have revealed that after taking leave, going to his home in Galle, and returning, he committed this theft without reporting back to the camp. He had accumulated excessive debt due to engaging in online gambling through a mobile phone application, and the police have uncovered information that he committed this crime to find Rs. 5,000.
Regarding this incident, further investigations are being conducted by OIC of the Criminal Division Chief Inspector N. B. C. K. Nanayakkara, under the direction of Port Police OIC Chief Inspector S. K. Samarasinghe.
