To strengthen operations to apprehend drunk drivers, breathalyzer tubes (balloons) have been distributed to all police stations island-wide, states Senior Superintendent of Police Manoj Ranagala, Director of the Traffic Division at Police Headquarters. Currently, 75,000 breathalyzer tubes have been imported into the country and distributed to police stations.

In addition, another 250,000 tubes are expected to arrive in the country next January, the Senior Superintendent of Police further stated.

Mr. Ranagala points out that extensive operations to apprehend drunk drivers have been launched island-wide during the New Year season. He emphasized that these special operations are being carried out with the aim of controlling the increase in fatal road accidents and property damage caused by drunk drivers. He further mentioned that police stations will continue to conduct immediate operations, especially at night, to apprehend drunk drivers even after the Sinhala New Year season.

Meanwhile, on the 24th alone, 136 drunk drivers were arrested by police stations island-wide.
