The pilot project to introduce the facility for bus passengers to pay their travel fares using their bank cards without cash was officially launched yesterday (24). The program was inaugurated at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre under the patronage of Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Mr. Bimal Rathnayake, and
its primary objective is to enhance transparency and quality in Sri Lanka's transport service with the guidance of the Ministry of Digital Economy.Speaking at the event, the Minister emphasized that no additional charges would be levied from passengers when using this new system. Since the bank charges applicable to payments will be borne by the bus owners, passengers will only have to pay the stipulated bus fare. He also pointed out that this would facilitate passengers to pay the exact fare, avoiding issues that arise when obtaining change.
Minister Bimal Rathnayake further stated that the situations that may arise during the practical implementation of the new digital system will be closely monitored over the next few days.
