Out of the 339 municipal councils, urban councils, and Pradeshiya Sabhas that held elections on Tuesday, 160 have resulted in hung councils, where no single party has secured a clear majority. These councils require coalition arrangements with other parties or independent groups to form administrations.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), which won control of 11 local authorities, has not achieved the 50% threshold needed to secure a simple majority in any of them.
Similarly, no party has obtained a clear mandate in key local authorities across Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya, and Nuwara Eliya.
In Batticaloa district, ten of the thirteen local authorities are without a decisive winner. This trend is mirrored in Mullaitivu, where three out of four local authorities are in the same position. In Puttalam, coalition governance will be necessary in nine of its twelve local authorities.
