With the festive season approaching, vendors are warning that the demand for eggs is likely to continue increasing, which could lead to further price hikes. This situation is exacerbated by the current global trade dynamics, which have put additional pressure on the egg supply in Sri Lanka.
Ajith Gunasekara, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Livestock Producers Association, has raised concerns about the potential for an egg shortage in the near future. He explained that the ongoing global situation, including the outbreak of bird flu in several countries, has led to a surge in demand for eggs from India, creating supply constraints. As a result, Sri Lanka may face difficulties in importing eggs at a fair price, especially if the supply from India remains uncertain.
"Currently, due to the avian flu pandemic, global demand for Indian eggs has surged. This will make it challenging for Sri Lanka to import eggs from India at the usual fair price. We might face supply issues in the future, particularly with rising transportation costs and the uncertainty of supply conditions in India," Gunasekara said.
