A disturbing incident at a boys’ school in the Colombo education zone has prompted a formal investigation by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA). Allegations have emerged against a primary school teacher who is said to have physically assaulted Grade 3 students using a steel ruler. The accused, R. Ganeshmoorthy, a primary school teacher, allegedly subjected his Grade 3 students to inhumane punishment for their inability to memorize a lesson. According to student testimonies, the punishment involved hitting them with a steel ruler, a clear violation of child protection laws and ethical teaching practices.

How the Investigation Began

The incident gained public attention after a video went viral on social media, showing evidence of the assault. Following a complaint lodged on April 8, the Special Investigations Unit of the NCPA initiated a thorough probe into the matter. NCPA Director Sajeevani Abeykoon confirmed the start of the investigation during a press briefing.

Evidence Collection and Legal Process

The investigation team has taken statements from the victims, their parents, the school’s deputy principal, and other concerned parents. The assaulted children, both 7 years old, were also sent for a Judicial Medical Examination (JMO) to document physical injuries.

Furthermore, the NCPA has requested a court order to obtain video testimony from the children, which can serve as crucial evidence in legal proceedings. The initial phase of the investigation has been completed, and the case has been forwarded to court under Section 308 of the Sri Lankan Penal Code, which covers serious physical harm or abuse against minors.

Status of the Accused

The suspect, a resident of the Badulla area, is currently evading arrest. A special police operation has been launched to track down and apprehend the teacher.
